What You Need to Know Before Donating Your Hair

At Moef Salon, we love when clients choose to make a difference by donating their hair. Whether it’s to support someone going through treatment or as part of a personal transformation, it’s a beautiful and generous act. But before you make the cut, there are a few important things to know to ensure your donation actually helps someone in need.

1. Not All Organizations Are the Same

Before donating, do a little research. Some organizations provide wigs completely free to recipients, while others may sell them or charge families. If your goal is to give directly to someone in need, make sure you’re choosing a group that aligns with your values.

Here are a few organizations we trust:

• Wigs for Kids – Requires 12 inches of clean, dry hair. No chemical treatments allowed. They never charge families.

• Children With Hair Loss – Accepts 8 inches or more. Color-treated hair is okay. Wigs are provided at no cost to recipients.

• Hair We Share – Requires 12 inches and accepts colored or gray hair. They provide wigs free of charge and offer a ponytail tracking program if you’d like to see where your hair goes.

2. Healthy Hair Matters

Donation organizations need strong, healthy hair. If your hair is very dry, over-processed, or damaged, it may not be usable. We may suggest deep conditioning treatments or a short wait before donating to give your hair time to recover.

3. Clean and Completely Dry

Your hair needs to be clean and 100% dry before it’s cut. Hair that’s damp—even slightly—can develop mold while being stored or shipped and will have to be discarded. At Moef, we’ll handle the prep to make sure your donation is done properly.

4. The Cut Must Be in a Braid or Ponytail

To be accepted, your hair needs to be bundled before cutting. That means it must be tied securely in a ponytail or braid. This keeps the strands aligned in the same direction, which is crucial for making high-quality wigs.

5. It’s More Than Just Hair

Donating your hair can be emotional. For many people, it marks the end of one chapter and the beginning of another. Whether you’re doing it in honor of someone or simply ready for change, we’re here to support you through it with care and intention.

6. We’re Here to Help

If you’re not sure which organization is right for you or how to ship your donation, we’re happy to help. Let us know when booking that your appointment is for a hair donation and we’ll take care of the rest.

Giving your hair is a deeply personal and generous choice. At Moef Salon, we’re honored to be part of that moment. We’ll make sure your donation not only feels good but truly makes a difference.
